Sustainable Avocado Oil: What to Look For When Buying
Choosing an oil isn’t just about flavour or nutrition — it’s also about impact. With growing awareness of sustainability, more people are asking: how is my food produced, and what footprint does it leave?
Why Sustainability Matters
Industrial oil production often involves monocultures, heavy chemical use, and long supply chains that contribute to emissions. By contrast, sustainably grown and locally pressed oils reduce environmental impact and support local economies.
Signs of a Sustainable Oil
Local Origin: Shorter transport = lower emissions.
Minimal Processing: Cold-pressing is gentler and uses less energy.
Orchard Care: Responsible water use and soil health practices.
Packaging: Recyclable or reusable bottles.
The Avo Keeper’s Commitment
At The Avo Keeper, sustainability isn’t a marketing add-on — it’s central to our ethos. But we’re not able to do everything. Our focus is about orchard practice, largely looking after tree and soil health and finding ways to reduce chemical use by working with nature. We are also looking at our packaging - you will see we encourage you to keep the bottle - known as your ‘Keepsake bottle’ and then refill it using the pouch. The pouch can be recycled at soft plastics. We are also working with our local community planting and pest control. Garry works tirelessly with the group and their focus is on increasing our biodiversity in the area. Part of our desire with The Avo Keeper is to donate funds and time to this. So far we have contributed a lot of time and over $100.
Our avocados are grown in New Zealand with respect for the land, and our cold-pressing process avoids chemicals or unnecessary refinement. We also work towards reducing waste and offering packaging that aligns with eco-conscious values.
By choosing avocado oil produced this way, you’re not only nourishing yourself but also supporting practices that care for the future of our orchards and communities.
